Black Screen After Login After Microsoft 64-bit Updates

Computer: Acer Aspire 7741Z-5731-64-bit, Intel Pentium processor P6000, 1.86 GHz,
3MB L3 cache, 3 GB DDR3 Memory running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Problem:

Get normal login screen, but immediately following login, I get a black screen that either says
“Setting up personalized settings.....” and it never finishes (1 hr) or “Personalized Settings (Not Responding).” System won’t respond to CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Does
this with both users' login.

Steps to Resolve
1. Did a hard reboot and opened in safe mode with command prompt. Type rstrui to restore to before update. Get following message-

“System did not complete successfully. Your computer’s system files and
and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the file
(c:\windows\assembly\nativeimages_v2.050727_64
\System.Printing\5a8439298c3 from the restore point. The point was
damaged or was deleted during the restore.”

2. Above happens no matter which restore point I use (There were only 2 points—both from the 3/26 updates).

3. Go back to command prompt and type: dir C:\Win* per directions in another post to see where directory is. Get “ Volume in drive C is ACER [followed by volume serial number]…..0 Files, 0 bytes, 1 Dir 161,053,274,112 byte free.”

Please note that I don’t know computers at this level and am flying more than a bit blind, but am hoping this does not mean there is nothing there. I assumed there was no problem here and continued to follow the directions which were as follows:
"cd /d Q:\windows\System32\config"

at which point I get the message that “The system cannot find the path specified.”

4. AFTER this, I also at some point yesterday went through a repair system (didn’t write down the details) steps that apparently uninstalled SP1 because it shows on the restore screen underneath the restore points as INSTALL.

I am hoping not to have to start over from scratch…I have a lot of Microsoft 2007 and 2010 software and from a past experience know it is going to be a headache to get a usable licenses since I did not uninstall before this mess.
