After updates run, PC Stops working until I restore to BackUp Image? After updates run, PC Stops working until I restore to BackUp Image?
I have an older Laptop though it is still a very nice one that I think was ahead of its time.
HP Compaq nx9420. I recently bought and upgraded from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit Version. This new install is on a new HD. It took me about 4 times to get the install to take, but only because it would lock up after updating. I ended up installing the updates one at a time and backing up the system after each one that installed with out locking the system up. Since then I just have not ran any updates even though windows constantly reminds me that I have 15 important updates waiting to be installed.
There is one thing that happens after installing the updates that tells me right off the back if there is going to be a problem. During the windows load up screen when it says "Starting Windows", the Windows 7 icon where the windows merge together is gone and it reverts back to the XP progress bar. ( Hope this makes sense ).
I only have two things that have been effected as far as I know. My track pad has lost the ability to scroll up and down and, battery has to be unplugged and plugged back in if I want the PC to recognize that it is there and start to recharge.
Is there anyway way to know which updates are safe to install or why they are causing the system to crash. It goes to system recovery and after restarting god knows how many times, it tells me windows can not fix the problem? | My System Specs |

Why does this update crash my system?
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP...etc...etc... (KB2446708)
System trys to recover with system restore point, but can't. I have to use my back up image? Please tell me if this is important?
Newest update on this issue. I went through and again started installing updates one at a time, backing up the system image if they installed without error, but then this one caused it to crash once again, and once again I had to resort to my back up image to restore the system to working order????? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Compaq nx9420 OS Windows 7 Professional CPU Duo core T5600 @ 1.83GHz each Motherboard RB547UT#ABA Memory 3GB (1 built in, and 2GB stick DDR2-5333 SDRAM Graphics Card ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256MB) Sound Card AD1981HD @ Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M Monitor(s) Displays AU Optronics B170PW03 V3 (17" LCD) Keyboard Laptop, or usb external Mouse Track Pad, wireless nano Vakoss Hard Drives Seagate MomentusXT 500GB SATA 32MBCACHE 7200RPM

Hello Talonbyrd, I'm quite new to this forum too... but have done some research. Maybe you'd be better off posting a new thread in 'Crashes-Debugging' using the posting instructions available in the first of that thread. The people willing to help probably need the info that you're asked to attach in that instruction... Hi TALONBYRD, welcome to the forum. .
.
Did you do a Windows 7 check for compatibility with your laptop before you installed? Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows .
.
I just did some searching and found this thread on the HP forum: Re: Looking to install Windows 7 on my nx9420 - HP Support Forum
Although it is an 'old' thread, it is worth reading. . Quote: Go to Control Panel -> Devices Manager
Click with right button of Your mouse on each yellow sign and choose properties. Then go to bottom details and paste here Hardware Ids. This way we will know what it is.
Below You've got example how to do it: | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Packard Bell OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz Motherboard Packard Bell IPISB-AG Memory 3.00 GB Graphics Card (1) Intel(R) HD Graphics (2) VNC Mirror Driver Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays AIO LCD Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard Wireless Mouse Wireless Hard Drives WDC WD10EADX-22TDHB0 ATA Device

There are 2 separate issues here- one is of missing drivers, the other problematic updates.
On older machines, drivers can be a pain. The way to go about it would be to try vista/xp drivers in compatibility mode if Windows 7 drivers are not available from the OEM's support page. Failing that, try the drivers available from device manufacturers' sites like realtek, nvidia/ati etc. or update drivers via the device manager. If nothing works, one needs to try out user linked drivers in community forums and such like that have worked in real experience.
As for windows updates, the tedious way out is to disable automatic updates and research each update (aka google) before installing it. This presumes that one understands the kb articles jargon, but googling will also give you understandable info and any problems associated with a particular update. Install only after researching. In the meantime make sure your AV protection is effective and updated.
But its also possible that your system is now royally screwed depending on how many drivers and updates you've tried. I suggest you first run a sfc scan to fix any corrupted system files (and maybe even a repair install if you're upto it and have a windows disk), then update all drivers so you have a functional system. After that tackle windows updates. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Too many to describe... OS Windows 7 x64 pro/ Windows 7 x86 Pro/ XP SP3 x86 |

I think what you are seeing is Windows Seven's final install bits? Have you went completely through the install? If doing it over, UNcheck the box where it says "Activate windows when I'm online", you can do that part later. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built Desktop By DataTech OS Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 CPU Intel i5-2550K, Differing ~4.4-4.8GHz No built in GPU Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz 4x4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old, beat-up Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon Rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans, push-pull, @1300 RPM Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB for OS, 750GB Seagate MomentusXT for data, 500GB Seagate Constellation for storage Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Antivirus Norton Internet Security Browser IE 9, Opera when needed Other Info 4 case fans, LG BluRay-RE, ASUS DVD-RW, Mr. Fusion power generator with flux capacitor, 1.21 gigawatts. |
