    Can't Install SP1

I recently had to replace the hard drive on my computer (for the second time in the past year or so). I've managed to install all updates except for service pack 1. I've tried a few troubleshooting steps, including running the Update Readiness Tool. Here is a copy of the CheckSUR log.

Have you tried a System File Check?

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Also How are you installing SP1? Is it through Automatic Updates or a standalone Installer?

I'm installing through the standalone installer. I didn't think about the system file checker until after posting the thread. I'll update with the results in few minutes.

EDIT: It said it found some corrupt files and could not repair all of them. I'm looking through the log now. I plan to try installing SP1 again, and if it fails again, I run SFC one or two more times.

    Hello!

Tricky error to fix that one. I need to grab some more logs just to confirm a few things.

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

    Thanks a lot!

Just to update you on what I've done since my last post. I tired installing SP1 again with the same result. I tried using the readiness tool again and it said it fails to install. I checked the CheckSUR file again and it said "Cabinet C:\Windows\CheckSur\v1.0\windows6.1-7601-x64-clientcab4.cab was either not found or its signature was not valid." I went to the the file was supposed to be located and did not see a file named "windows6.1-7601-x64-clientcab4.cab". I ran SFC /scannow again and it had the same result as before. Here is the folder you requested.

Good to see you again Richard. It's been a while since I've been on. Good to see the site is same as ever.

    Hello again!

Hmmm. Quite a mess actually. I can fix it all, but I am just wondering about the integrity of the hard disk.

If you are willing, I would recommend running a Short and Long Self Check (DST) and a SMART Check if you can with Sea Tools for Windows: | Seagate

If you don't want to at this time, tell me, and I shall proceed with the fix anyway.

    Thanks a lot!

I'm going to use the Western Digital HD diagnostic software, since that is the brand of the new hard drive (I need to update my System Specs to reflect this). If you can go ahead and post the solution I would appreciate it.

EDIT: short test passed. I'm about to run the long test.

All the test with the Western Digital HD diagnostic tool passed. All smart information is good. No bad sectors. I'm happy to say the new hard drive seems to be working perfectly. All I need now is to fix the current errors on my system, and finally get SP1 installed.

    Hello again!

As I mentioned above, a hard to fix error. The problem is that the Windows Serving Stack update appears to have gone very wrong.

This is certainly going to be pretty nasty. I have also been in discussion with MowGreen, and the expertise that he brings to the table. Together, we are very interested in this log!

In the mean time, can you please run some MD5 scans for me?

OTL - Download or alternative link here and here

Please Download OTL to your Desktop
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure most other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    /md5start
    dpx.dll
    cmiadapter.dll
    CbsCore.dll
    drvstore.dll
    cmiv2.dll
    wcp.dll
    wbemcore.dll

    /md5stop
    • Click the None button, followed by Run Scan button. The scan wont take long (between 5 - 15 minutes)
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it here.

    Thanks a lot!
