He had no right to give you that key. He has the rights to install the software on one computer, either 32 or 64 bit....not both. If you use it as well, you are committing software piracy.
You assumed it is the same key since retail versions come with 32 and 64 bit versions and one key. Don't know what his brother got from his school but probably was not a retail version and indeed he may have received two keys.
