    If there are any entries that show Microsoft or Windows Update in them such as windowsupdate.com, microsoftupdate.com, etc, then you will need to open Notepad Elevated in order to remove them.
    To open Notepad Elevated you need to right click Notepad and choose 'Run as administrator', then agree to the UAC prompt.

    If there are no entries in the hosts file that is blocking communication to the update servers from your system, then either there is either a registry setting that's been added ( which usually occurs on refurbished systems that were configured to update from an internal server on a network rather then from the external Microsoft update servers ), some "thing" filtering communication with websites ( this would be stemming from a router on a home network or a 3rd party firewall ), or from a folder's Permissions being overly locked down.

    However, the communications issue appear to be resolved in the WU.log.

    The communication issue does not appear to be caused by the hosts file or the registry settings. I have a strong feeling that something on the network is the cause.

    How is the system connected to the net ... is this a home network with either a wired or wireless router involved ?
    Advise you to connect the system directly to what the network is plugged into, like a broadband modem, so we can rule out a router as the cause.

    direct connect. I tether to cellphone for mobile broadband. I have two other similar but older laptops that connect w/o issue using same cord, phone, network.

    Discovered today that attempting to attach files in email disconnects internet as well, using gmail or live.com

    I tried to post a reply yet it never showed up.

    Since the other laptops have none of these issues it's safe to say that something is blocking/dropping the connection on the problematic system.

    Suggest you open an Elevated Command Prompt ( right click command or cmd.exe, choose 'Run as administrator', agree to the
    UAC prompt ), then type in the following commands, exactly as written including the spaces, pressing Enter after each command.
    The first command entered should result in this message

    Windows IP Configuration

    Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache
    ipconfig /flushdns
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    exit

    What was the result of trying to register the .dlls ?

    Microsoft also mentions this for the 8024402C return code


    1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Internet Explorer.
    2. Click the Tools button, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
    3. Under Automatic configuration, select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.



    If 'Automatically detect settings' is checked, uncheck it. If it's not, check it and then test connectivity.

    Which edition of Windows is installed on the other laptops that do not have these weird connection issues ?

    In your initial post you mentioned " I tether to my cellphone for internet. So I installed drivers and Access Manager for that. "

    What is 'Access Manager', is it installed on the other laptops, and does it do any monitoring of network traffic ?

    And, finally, there may be an issue with the network card. Swapping network cards is not that difficult on most laptops so if you can test another one we could at least rule out that as the cause of these weird issues.

    'regsrv32' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
    regsrv32 wups2.dll
    same result.

    "Access Manager" s the dialer prog. my cell carrier is VZW. Other laptops have XP and Vista. All have Access Manager as it's required for tethering. FYI, I have no issues downloading from CNET or Majorgeeks sites.
    As far as I know, I don't use a network card. Will try unchecking the auto detects try it, then re-check.

    My bad ... I've corrected the command to regsvr32 in my previous post.

    Please go over it again and let us know the results of running each command and what happened after you did the Microsoft step for the 8024402C return code .
