    Problem Installing msxml4.dll KB954430

    Hello,
I downloaded the above hotfix based on the Secunia PSI telling me that my version of the msxml4.dll was out of date.I checked in system32 first and my version is indeed older than the version shown for KB954430.
I ran the installer but was told there was an error opening the installation log file, and that I should check to see the log file existed, but how am I supposed to find it?
Could the problem be that the installer is on my D drive? If so,where should I move it to?
    URGENT advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,Roy

Can you get it via Microsoft Update ??

Shouldn't matter where you try to install from, just where you install to.

    Hello pricetech,

When I go to Microsoft Update I am told no updates are available.

Do you, or does anyone else, have any other ideas?

    Please advise.

    Thanks and regards,Roy

The error opening the log file message indicates that something is amiss with MSXML 4.

Open the list of installed software/programs by clicking the Start orb.
In the Search programs and files field type in appwiz.cpl
    Under Programs, click on appwiz.cpl

Locate MSXML 4. Since we don't know which Service Pack level it's now at and the name of the installation may differ in Windows 7, please note that it may be listed as Microsoft MSXML 4 SP2 or MSXML 4 SP2 or MSXML 4 SP3.

Click once on the MSXML 4 installation to highlight it.
On the Menu Bar there should be options to Uninstall | Change | or Repair it.
If there is no Repair link, then click on Uninstall | Change, allow the window to load and choose the Repair option.

IF there is no option to Repair MSXML 4, then suggest you uninstall it, and then restart the system.

This is the link where you can obtain MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (Microsoft XML Core Services) from the Microsoft Download Center, Roy -

MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 (Microsoft XML Core Services)

The msxml4.dll in MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 3 is at Version 4.30.2100.0, which would negate the need to install KB954430.

IF there is a Repair option available for MSXML4 SP 2 and the Repair is successful, download the update from here and save it -

Security Update for MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB954430)

Close all open programs and browsers.

Install msxml4-KB954430-enu.exe by right clicking it, choose 'Run as administrator', agree to the UAC prompt, and restart the system after it installs.

    Hello MowGreen,

I did as you suggested regarding searching for appwiz.cpl and also searched for it in my C drive, but the only result related to this thread.

I also searched System32 for any msxml files, and found the following versions:

    3.dll
    3a.dll
    3r.dll
    4.dll
    4r.dll
    6.dll
    6r.dll

    What should I do now?

    Please advise further.

    Thanks and regards,Roy

To be clear here, there is no MSXML 4 listed in Programs and Features ?

If that's the situation then suggest you can delete msxml4r.dll & msxml4.dll then forget about using MSXML 4 as it's being replaced with MSXML 6 anyway.

The only situation I know of that may require or explain the presence of MSXML 4 in Windows 7 is HP Printer software.
If that's the situation, then I have both msxml4r.dll and msxml4.dll on hand from MSXML 4 SP3.
I think we can replace the outdated, vulnerable msxml 4 .dlls on your system with them if need be.

We'll cross that bridge if you need MSXML 4 on the system.

I'm sorry to tell you this but I'm dealing with recent news that a friend passed away. I have to make some phone calls to find out what happened and inform some of his friends.
Not sure when I'll be able to get back to this thread, Roy, so please bear with me.

I installed msxml 4 SP3 and KB973685 to update it, and the problem was solved. (I do have an HP Printer).
My sincere thanks for your help, and I'm very sorry to hear about your friend.

You're mowst welcome. I'm glad to hear your "ordeal" with the update is over, Roy.

Thanks for the condolences. Still haven't heard what exactly happened and the really sad part is that his daughter is 8 months pregnant.
