    windows update!

    hi,

Windows update downloaded the latest updates and when i shut down the system it tells me that do not power off or unplug the system windows is installing the update and it goes on.I left the machine on for about 12 hours and still it is showing as installing the updates.I don't know if it is some kind of error and i powered off the system. When i restart the system and hit the shut down button it gives me the same message again and it goes on installing.

I also did a manual install but it still shows me the same message that it is installing the updates. But when i checked the installed updates it shows all the updates as successful.
It is not letting me shut down the system normally.

    Help would be appreciated

Please copy and past the last 50 to 75 lines of the WindowsUpdate.log into your reply so that someone may see what the issue is.
Click the Start orb > in the Search programs and files field type in windowsupdate.log
Under Programs, click on windowsupdate.log to open it.

There were, at least, 3 updates involved in this issue.

Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) - Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 XML Editor (KB2251489) - Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)

Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) was downloaded first but was continually failing to install.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package, Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 XML Editor (KB2251489), and KB2538242 were attempting to install together once they were eventually downloaded.
The installation failure of KB2538242 was the cause of the issue.
It also appears that KB2538243 and KB2251489 eventually installed correctly.

Please first confirm that they are installed by checking the list of Installed Updates.

To View installed updates click the Start orb > in the Search field type in ins >
Under Control Panel click on View installed updates.

If they are listed as installed, then suggest you remove the contents of the subfolder where the updates are downloaded to if the shutdown issue is still occurring.

The downloaded updates are located in Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
Move all of the contents to the Recycle Bin.

I checked the Microsoft Update Answers forum and there are many threads that indicate that there's an issue with KB2538242

Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) is installing multiple times

One poster contacted MS Support and here's what he was told
    OK FOLKS< HERE"S A NEW INFORMATION__
I contacted a Microsoft free support tech because this is a security update.
He advised me that KB2538242 is defective and will be replaced in two weeks.
A couple of other posters stated that they download the 2 separate packages of the update and manually installed them. That resolved the installation issue.

You could try a manual installation of KB2538242 to see if that resolves the installation issue or, you can Hide it for now, wait until it's released again and then install it - How to Hide or Restore Hidden Windows Updates in Windows 7

If you choose the manual installation method, download both vcredist_x64.EXE and
vcredist_x86.EXE from the below link and save them -
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update

Install vcredist_x86.EXE first by right clicking it, choose 'Run as administrator', and agree to the UAC prompt.
Restart the system if requested to, then install vcredist_x64.EXE using the right click 'Run as' method, and restart if requested .

I, too, had problems with Windows Update actually FAILING, on that particular day a month or two ago when there were those several very updates and service packs distributed for Visual C++.

I didn't have exactly the symptoms described by OP, but after the updates were applied and Windows re-booted to complete the application of the updates, all of them were backed out and the resulting log showed "FAILED" for a whole slew.

My workaround was to apply them (i.e. to check them in the list) INDIVIDUALLY, one at a time, rather than to apply them all checked at once.

And sure enough, as I worked my way through them one at a time they each DID get applied successfully. Something about the whole group of them together was obviously incompatible, but individually they were fine.

I did open a ticket with Microsoft, and as I recall it was specifically triggered by KB2467175 update to Visual C++ 2005 redistributable, which failed to be installed with an error 1935.

Anyway, again... taking the time and trouble to run through them all one at a time resolved my problem. Eventually they were all completed and applied SUCCESSFULLY.

Just my experience with this same particular group of updates, where it does appear lots of us have had some kind of difficulty in one form or another.

I wasnt able to install both
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)
    and
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)

What I had to do was to install them separately. After doing so, I had to 'hide' the 2005 as it kept trying to update even though it was installed successfully so as the windows update stated.
So If I can believe what windows updates stated. I do have both installed successfully and I won't need to worry about that again, or about them trying to re-update.
