Update: Downloaded KB2522422 and SP1, installed sp1 first and it failed, installed KB...2422 and it failed.

Would resolving the issues reported in the Windows Update Readiness tool log solve these problems? How can I resolve them?

The corrupted content shown in the CheckSUR.log is directly attributable to the presence of Norton.

The most reliable way to resolve and prevent this issue from occurring again is to use HP's recovery method to revert the system back to the state it was when first booted up.

Then uninstall Norton before doing anything else.
You should then run their special removal tool to ensure all remnants of "it" are gone:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product

The system has no AV installed now and you should immediately create a Standard User Account for day to day activities such as surfing the internet - How to Create, Delete and Modify User Accounts in Windows 7

As of today, a Standard User account is much safer to surf the internet with than a User Account that has Administrator privileges - Report: 64% of all Microsoft vulnerabilities for 2009 mitigated by Least Privilege accounts

Next, using Internet Explorer, download and save the complete, standalone package of Win 7 SP1 -
    Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

Click the Continue button to Validate Windows 7 then download and save windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

Create a folder on the root drive, the drive where Windows is installed to, usually C:\, and name it SP, Service Pack, or whatever suits your fancy. Move windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe to that newly created folder.

Right click windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe, choose 'Run as administrator', and agree to the UAC prompt to install SP1.

After doing all of the required restarts, install an antivirus that is compatible with Windows and provides sufficient protection.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), Avast, and Avira are compatible with Win 7 and they all provide sufficient protection.
The last 2 have free Versions available -
    MSE
    Avast
    Avira

Install one of the above, the corruption issue should no longer be an issue in the future, and you're good to go !

What is the deal with Norton and win 7 lately?
Norton is all "let me look at that"
Then just scribbles all over the page hands it back and says "here ya go!"

A repair install could straighten you out.

Please reread my previous post. A Repair Install will provide a temporary solution for this corruption issue.
It will occur again because of the presence of Norton .

It's your choice whether you want to keep doing Repair Installations or just use HP's recovery method, uninstall Norton, run their removal tool, install SP1, install a free AV, and not have to repeatedly deal with this issue.

Sorry I should have clarified that point, thought it was a given by now.

Your point was well taken. I was referring to Richman's comment about it being "too hard a problem".
It's not as long as one gets rid of the 'Windows System Crippler' known as Norton.
