According to MSDN retail subscriptions expire in one year and have to be renewed. This chart compares the various subscriptions. As far as product keys are concerned, this may have the answers you seek.

It was an elms account i got it from through college but i think they get them from MSDN. Doe's that still mean it will only last one year?

Here's what I've been able to find. Apparently, e-academy's License Management System (ELMS) is a part of the MSDN Academic Alliance.
