    Windows Update problem

    I just re-installed Win7-64. Windows Update started working in the background and there were 70 or 80-some updates. After a few, it had an error message that said the updates failed. When I rebooted, and before it shutdown, Windows said it was installing 62 updates. When the computer rebooted, WinUpdate starts to d/l and install those 80 updates again. Again, the error message appears that says the updates failed. I tried this a few times and it ends up in a loop where the updates never seem to be installed. Is there a fix for this endless loop?

    Welcome
    Set update to notify and not install. Then you install a few at a time.

    For troubleshooting I suggest -

    *You should check in Event Viewer
    Start - Event Viewer - Windows Logs - System & Application.
    Check for any red error messages to do with this problem.

    *What is listed { as regards your problem} in Windows Update - View Update History?

    *Clean out App data / local / temp.
    Start - Run - type in %temp% - ok - organize - select all - organize - delete { note you may be asked to skip some - that is ok}

    As Rich said above -
    Re your update settings -
    * Change them to notify you but let you choose when to download them.
    * Do a few at a time only rather than "oodles" at once.

    * Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

    * Sometimes in order to get updates to install properly, you may need to do them manually.

    .
    As Jan said just pay attention to WU errors only. Don't freak out if you see other errors in event viewer. Back in the day I used to worry about every error in event viewer but unless you are actually having problems most can usually be ignored.
