So theres no way to recover it from windows.old?
Unfortunately, SeaVixen is correct. If your school had an educational volume license agreement, they could only provide you the key if you are still a student (even if it was yours when you were a student, and subsequently lost after leaving the school). Assuming this was the type of licensing they had at the time, they pay based on how many students or devices they expect to give licenses to, and those are covered for the time the student is at the school. If you had a key and left, the key should continue to work and activate as long as you have that operating system installation working. However, if you reinstall, it's no longer covered under that license unless you're still a student - so if you've left, and you ask for a key, they're not going to provide you one (even if you had a valid one before). You're going to unfortunately have to purchase a new license for your new install if this is the case. If you're still a student, and they've paid for enough licenses for that year or contract cycle to cover you, that's a different story, but if you've left you aren't likely to get them to give you a key and violate their licensing agreement.
