    Windows 7 Pro Product Key

    Hi All,

    I bought a new laptop that came with win7 basics, but I thought since I have the win7 pro cd I might as well install the pro. I remember that the for XP I could use several the same product key for 2 laptops, can I still do this? I don't want to try and activate because I'm afraid that microsoft might block my other laptop?

    Thanks for the help!

    One product key is for one system only :)
    You will need an upgrade DVD if you want to go from Home Basic to Professional

    You can try by all means, but the terms of your particular End User Licence Agreement stipulate one computer per licence.

    You may or may not be able to activate Windows on another computer while you have it already installed, but you're still likely to fall foul of Microsoft's validation checks.

       Note

    Windows 7 / Vista is version specific and not bit-rate specific, i.e. a Home Premium COA Windows activation key will activate either the 32-bit or the 64-bit Windows Home Premium Operating System.

    Hello merelda!

    As you can see the Windows 7 activation keys are version specific and will not activate another version, your Windows 7 Basic key will only activate the Basic version.

    You can use Anytime Upgrade to change from Basic to a higher version (see Chart below) using a retail Win7 upgrade key or cheaper Anytime Upgrade key.

    Just type "Anytime" in Start Search box to start the process, insert key, unlocks extra features in 10 minutes or less.

    Actually.... my problem is a little bit more complicated
    My Old laptop was in Ubuntu, and new laptop was in windows basic. I upgraded New laptop to pro with dual boot Ubuntu (I didn't know about the upgrade thing before so I just cleaned installed it..), and cleaned installed Windows Pro on the old laptop...

    Old laptop: Ubuntu -----> Win7 Pro (Not activated)
    New laptop: WIn7 Basic -----> Win7 Pro (Activated) + Ubuntu10.10

    So I guess now I just have to go get another windows install cd then?
