I manually check for Windows updates. Today I noticed that there is a lot of internet activity - short packets both inbound and outbound - while the Update procedure has checked for updates and is "waiting" for me to decide what to do next. Is this normal? Is it attempting to pre-download some of the updates just in case I decide to install them? Once I make a selection the percentage marker stays on zero so I'm pretty sure there is no useful activity being done.
Prior to this behavior showing up my PC died - hung up tight - during a download of fixes. I had to power down and reboot. Did this do permanent damage to the Windows Update function?
Update: I tried the download again - the 3rd or 4th time - and this time it's working fine. No diagnostic work is possible, but I'd still like to know if anybody has seen this kind of behavior and knows what it signifies.
