    Windows 7 Update Issue

    Hi,
Not sure this is the correct forum to post this in, but anyway, I have an Acer Aspire 5517-1208 notebook computer, it came with the windows 7 home premium already installed. About 3hrs ago, I reset it, because it had new updates to finish installing, the update completed, but now I can't log onto my computer. I've tried going into safe mode, repairing windows startup, etc. All I keep getting is either a blank black screen, when trying to do anything but repair windows, or when I use the repair option I get a blue screen with a little white bird and what looks like a tree branch on the right side of the screen. Unfortunately I didn't make a factory restore disk, and when I tried using the alt+F10 to restore back to factory, the screen just hangs saying please wait a moment...

I waited over 30mins and nothing had changed. Can anyone help me please?

    Thanks

    How did you reset it?
Do you get any messages or errors on the black screen?

Can you access the repair console by pressing F8 during start up?

If you can,go to the command line in the repair console and type sfc /scannow
    See if that helps.

If that fails, can you download Partition Wizard Bootable CD on another pc,burn it and run it on the computer. Then boot into the CD (make sure boot from CD is allowed in BIOS) and select resolution 1.Yes to the other messages.
Once your inside the PW console can you tell me what you see. There should be a volume called C and It should be set to Primary>Active. Also are there any other Volumes? If so what is written under them? (system, boot etc)
And all Volumes should be Basic Disks.
Link for the bootable disk: Free Download Partition Wizard

Let us know how you get on.

Did you run the startup repair three times?Sounds like it did try to fix you the first time you ran it. Sometimes it takes 3 times before it restores the boot files. Good luck to you with this problem.

I tried using the startup repair 3x +, but still only get the blue screen with the branch and dove on it. I purchased it with a 2yr warranty, and am planning on taking it in Monday to see if they can fix it, if not, I'm guaranteed a replacement. The only way I'm able to restart the computer is by holding the power button for 5secs. until it turns off, ctrl/alt/del won't work at all, I'm definitely frustrated, hopefully when I take it in they can fix it, I know one thing I'm shutting off the automatic updates, they're nothing but trouble...

P.S. thanks for the welcome myzr7

Sasha04, Sorry that startup repair did not work for you. Good luck to you with the warranty from the store. If you did not try them Minotar's tips was very good things to try. Could not hurt anything to run sfc /scannow since you seem to be able to get to the repair console.
Hope that you stay with us here and enjoy some of the fine How to's in the tutorial section.

Sasha, There are many incidents of Auto updates causing BSOD's. This one I link you to is from last year but it mentions getting into safe mode and then msconfig, disabling some startup programs, with some success at fixing problem. Also if you can get into safe mode you can also go to device manager and roll back your graphics driver. You might even be able to go to windows update and reverse any updates that you think may have been the problem. Good luck to you and let us know of your progress and solution

I wish I could get that to work, but I can't even get safe mode to run, all I get when I try (this is with all 3 different safe mode options) is the BSOD... I'm glad I have my warranty, it's just too bad that MS doesn't thoroughly check their updates before releasing them.

Well I got my laptop back today, the company repair place wouldn't even touch it because it is still under the manufacturer's warranty, so I was told I have to send it to or contact Acer to get it fixed Woulda been nice of them to tell me that in the first freaking place... Anyway, I'm going to try what you suggested Minotaur, after I run the boot disk I'll be sure to post everything listed word for word. I hope someone here can help me so I don't have to send it away again for another who knows how long

At least there's one good thing that came out of my ordeal... the ABC Warehouse where I originally purchased the laptop, gave me a voucher for the next time I go in to buy ANYTHING, I'll get whatever I buy at employee cost. They said the same thing I did though, woulda been nice of the company to tell them they wouldn't touch it, so we wouldn't have even sent it to them and wasted almost 3wks...

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I tried the system repair again, got a recovery iso from a site I'd found, ran it and now it's once again freezing up on the blue screen with the white bird and green branch. From what I've found, this image is the windows 7 theme or something? Anyway, It went a little further this time, a window popped up asking what keyboard format. After I chose US, and clicked next, the window closed and all that remained once again was the windows 7 background screen with nothing else. I sent a message to the mfg. their tech support sent me the following back...

No help of course... how long does the system recovery generally take? Maybe I'm not waiting long enough?
Please help, I'm just about at my wits end here....

Laptop still broken, called acer, they're making ME PAY to ship it to their service center in TX.... I thought that's what warranties were for?!

In any case, with bills and whatnot, I have no idea how soon I'll be able to afford to ship it I'm so ready to just give up and throw the dang thing away
