Alright, Now the readiness tool works again! I mean, it's stuck at 0% but there's no error...I don't remember what I did but it works now. It's still running, stays at 0% but I think thats better than not working at all right?

Well, as regards the second post, one minute. I will upload the CBS file

GOT THE "INSTALLATION COMPLETE" MESSAGE! Well, I'm sure I can provide you with a good Checksur.log file now?

By the way, whats the point of a progress bar that jumps from 0% to 100% in one sec but doesn't move for 30 minutes??
    Hello!

Firstly, one run of SURT completely crashed. That was the very first log you posted. Notice that there is no footer. You then dealt with the unfortunate issues you faced from SURT admirably (I would have done exactly the same, although maybe I would have waited a little bit longer) The error message you then received from SURT (0x80240009) maps to WU_E_OPERATIONINPROGRES, and is very much a temporary, not too serious error.

Then, error code 0xC355 is not a primary error message. It will go away when we fix the other error code (0x80070bc9), and cannot be fixed itself (the 0x80070bc9 error code can be fixed, and the 0xC355 will go away at the same time - famous last words!) Trust me on this.

Error code 0x80070bc9 maps to ERROR_FAIL_REBOOT_REQUIRED. This is the error code that every single failure is blamed on.

Background over, let's attempt a fix.

Firstly, it is unlikely that this is simple. When things are simple and successful, rebooting with updates works perfectly. The fact that it hasn't worked perfectly is slightly concerning.

Please try your updates one at a time, and restart between each one. Do not run SURT without restarting your computer, as that also uses the Update Engine.

    Any joy?

    Thanks a lot!

Oh, and two things I forgot to mention:

Firstly, I have seen the time SURT takes to run vary from 90 second (8 minutes more commonly) right up to (2 hours more commonly) but even up to 13 hours.

Also, the SURT progress bar should jump from 0% to 60% in a few hops within a few minutes (initialisation), remain at 60% for ages while it actually does its work, and then jump to 100% and then completion in a few seconds. That is how it is supposed to run.

btw It probably jumped to 60% at some point, but since I didn't look at it much during the entire 14 minutes it ran for I can't be 100% sure. It must have done that though

As soon as I logged back on the following window popped up:

Install windows service pacK: installation was not successful. An unknown error has occurred.

Clicking on "details" displays "error 0x800f0816"

There is a description of this error code and a suggested "fixit" here. Error Code: 0x800f0816 when installing Security Update for Windows - Microsoft Answers

I have tried the fixit. It said it fixed an error, but apparently it did nothing at all. As before, microsoft solutions didn't work once more.

As regards updating one thing at a time, two of the updates seem to work at first, but after a reboot there's the popup saying that Service Pack 1 could not be installed, along with the error 0x800f0816. I'm stuck again...

Still no progress... Any more ideas?? This situation is so weird... I can't install iTunes because of this error. Apparently I've been having it for some time but I never paid attention to it since it wasn't bothering me but it had to annoy me sometime I guess...

    To reiterate what I said in my Post 2 { last line.}

I believe the following still applies.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available
for issues related to Windows 7 Service Packs:
Note: Availability of chat, phone or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location.
Some issues may require more advanced support for which there may be a charge:

Alright, I will attempt to do that when I get on that computer.

I think I will I have to reinstall windows... Would that be a clean install or a repair one to fix errors, leaving my data alone?
