Windows 7: Best way/order to install updates after repair install?

I've had to repair install Windows 7 64 bit Pro (without SP1) due to unfixable persisting errors with certain updates. I now have about 95 or so updates ready to be installed, is there a way to prevent any errors from happening again? I tried to install 30 at once today but ended up getting an endless "shutdown" that I had to force the computer to turn off after about two hours. It then booted perfectly, some updates had failed to install, and I got a BSOD upon putting the laptop to sleep.

I did a system restore back to its "update-less" state so I'm ready to begin installing the updates again. Is there an error-proof way? A certain order one should install them with? Thanks!

Downlaod SP1 right from Microsoft.

They just check for updates from there.

You would want the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe 903.0 MB file. After you install that, I would recommend to only install the Windows Updates that are checked by default, then only a few at a time after that to help avoid any issues between them.

Re your update settings -
* I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose when to download them.
* Do a few at a time only rather than "oodles" at once.

* Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

I tend always to leave the .NET updates until every other Important one is installed - then install those one or two at a time, since they seem to cause the greatest number of problems.

I have most of the big updates saved to USB thumb drive. After a clean install I install the latest DirectX, Dot Net Framework, Internet Explorer, Silverlight, and Microsoft Security Essentials. Then hit windows update. My install media has SP1 integrated, if it didn't SP1 would be first on the list.
