Unable to Up Date MSE or Windows, (80072efd)

I have been trying to solve this problem for 2 days with no luck. Every thing else is able to access the internet and update except MSE and Windows Updates, code 80072efd.
    1. Tried M/S site and did everything I could find.
    2. Tried running M/S Fix tool and I get the same code for that 80072efd.
    3. Ran sfc /scannow many times.
    4. Tried 2 different restore points, unable to get restore to work.
    5. Ran complete scans with MSE, MBAM, SAS. and found nothing.
    6. Ran Disk Clean Up.
    7. Ran CCleaner clean up.
    8. Set built in firewall to default
I did find this NetPres-Out-TCP invalid firewall rules.
    Repaired that with CCleaner.
Can anybody think of anything else to check. Is their something I should do before a repair and install?

    Hello LaybackBear, :)
Well done with your trouble shooting!

    * Are you running 2 AV programs?

    * May indeed be quicker to do a Repair Install as you suggested.

    * I presume you have checked these links...

Thanks for getting back to me. I have did those sites yesterday but I did them again with no help. I have also removed MBAM and SAS just for a test, no help. I have run update trouble shoot and I recieved; (the remove device or resource won't accept the connection). This was done with my DSL modem only, no router. I have also ran the M/S scan on line. I forget the name but it's the one that removes it's self after 10 days. I would really like to find out what caused this so it may help others. I going to try some other things just to try to find out what happened.
    Thanks again for your reply.

I did as you recommended and emailed M/S.
I also removed MSE and download/installed it again. It installed and updated with no problems. I closed MSE and reopened it again. It will not check for updates just like before with same code. I can receive updates using Belarc Advisor. My problem must be a tough one; only you are offering any help. I'm going to put MBAM and SAS back on my computer. I will get back with updates.
    Thanks for your help.

The error message translates as ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT - so it's a 'simple' case of the two computers not being able to find each other.
In view of the fact that you say that the initial update of the fresh install of MSE worked OK, I suspect that one of two things is happening.
    1) You have a transparent proxy which is mis-directing normal updates - this may be malware.
    or
    2) a firewall rule blocking MSE updates.

Since MSE updates are part of the Windows Updates system, what settings are you using for WU?

    What firewall are you using?
When was the last time you scanned the system with an up-to-date malware scanner? (what found infections have there been recently?)

Thanks for your concern. I'm sorry I have been gone so long; had a little health problems. I haven't use the computer sense my last post. I removed the firewall before my health problem and still had the problem. Today Windows Updates and MSE updated properly and I have no idea why. Before my last post I run many antimaleware and antispyware along with MSE. No problems found.

Seems like it was a transient problem with (possibly) DNS, then.
Keep an eye on it over the next few days (at least until Wednesday next week - the next scheduled Windows updates are due out then) and see what happens.
