ToddB-

The best protection, in my opinion; is a sound knowledge of your O.S., a reliable and well-known antivirus, and a good data backup plan. Sevenforums can help you with the O.S. knowledge!

Since you have a lappy, you will need an external HDD; as DVD/CD discs are expensive and unreliable. If you cant afford an external drive for backing up a Windows 7 image, then at a minumum backup your user data regularly to disc or usb and store them in a secure location.
