well skype and the games (as far as I am aware, as I admittedly don't have much time to play any!) both use quite a bit of real time streaming technology, I wonder if other software/web-based streaming is also affected.

To be honest, I have no idea
Try filtering on error messages first (under Windows Application logs) to get rid of the informational fluff that's there.
Look for anyting involving networking (RAS, TCP/IP, NDIS, NDISWAN, etc.)

Right, it seems to have spread into Origin/BF3 now as well.

This crap is driving me nuts.

Right, I have located the problem.

Mumble.

When I have it running, I can't start programs. But thats the thing I use to find out if people are playing anything.

So its Windows Defender update thats doing something to Mumble which is causing trouble.

Any ideas?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Mumble, but it didn't remove the cache files, and I've had no luck finding on the internet how to get rid of them for a proper cleanup of Mumble files.

I have no Idea at all - Mumble is something that I have never used, and never intend to use ( I regret even getting a Facebook account <g>)

I would suspect, though, that uninstalling Mumble may be a good starting-point.
See what happens if you do that.
