Initially I got some java error, so I went and updated Java.
Nothing there is anything remotely to do with Java - the jscript file is Javascript, which is a whole different kettle o' fish

Interesting, though!

Go into Windows Services, and stop the Windows Update Service (don't disable it, just stop it).

Control Panel (classic View) Admin Tools>computer management>Services.

Once it opens, scroll down to "Windows Update" double click it and hit the stop button in the window that opens, when it stops, click OK and then close the services window.

Now navigate to this location and delete the folder "SoftwareDistribution"

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

Restart the PC and see if WUP works now.
Hmm - I thought you'd already done that earlier??
A better solution would have been to rename the folder, rather tha delete it - thereby preserving the data it contained (if you ever needed it for anything, which I have to admit in probably unlikely)

Well researched!

Ah ok. Is that error I was getting with regsvr32 /i mshtml something I should look into?

Thanks so much for all your help
