I attempted this: Hold down the Windows key and hit 'r' to bring up the Run command box. Type 'regsvr32 jscript', then 'regsvr32 vbscript', and finally 'regsvr32 /i mshtml', making sure to select 'OK' each time.
Initially I got some java error, so I went and updated Java.
Nothing there is anything remotely to do with Java - the jscript file is Javascript, which is a whole different kettle o' fish :)

This may have just fixed it, from the techguy forums:
Go into Windows Services, and stop the Windows Update Service (don't disable it, just stop it).
Control Panel (classic View) Admin Tools>computer management>Services.
Once it opens, scroll down to "Windows Update" double click it and hit the stop button in the window that opens, when it stops, click OK and then close the services window.
Now navigate to this location and delete the folder "SoftwareDistribution"
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Restart the PC and see if WUP works now.
Hmm - I thought you'd already done that earlier??
A better solution would have been to rename the folder, rather tha delete it - thereby preserving the data it contained (if you ever needed it for anything, which I have to admit in probably unlikely)

I keep getting this message from the Action center (Win7 Home Prem) - When I click on it to open it looks for Windows updates, if it finds any I can install no problem. After reboot, the message will appear again after a few minutes and tells me "Updates were installed: Never" but if I go to...
Hi,
I seem to be having some issues here which I believe are linked to a recent failure to run updates. There are two main issues.
1. I have the message in my Action centre - "Windows could not check for updates automatically (Important)" which is a red flag item.
2. My laptop is now so slow...
This error comes up in Action Center after logging into Windows. When I try to manually check for updates, it fails with a code 800b0100 unknown error. The PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.
I have tried to run the System Update Readiness tool from the Microsoft website to fix...
Hello,
I have bee trying to solve this problem for a few hours now. When I select "check for updates" in Windows Update it gives me the error mentioned in this thread's title (I've attached the screen shot). I tried to do the sfc scan but my command prompt box (after entering "sfc /scannow")...
Getting error code:
80070005
I have made sure I am logged in as administrator.
Also tried rebooting PC, modem and router.
Done Malware and Virus scans.
I'm also having trouble installing updates from online services. I think these problems are related.
