    Sure - carry on with method 2, as it's more likely to fix your problem than the repair of these errors is.

    OK -
    Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and enter the following commands
    ping download.windowsupdate.com
    IPCONFIG /ALL
    proxycfg -d
    net stop wuauserv
    net start wuauserv


    post the output in your response.

    What Firewall are you using? Windows own, or something else?

    Nah - turns out that Proxycfg is a Server command, rather than a workstation one :)

    Did wuauserv stop and start OK?

    I'll have to do some research - and it's bedtime for me now. Back tomorrow!
