Windows 7 - Windows/Office Update

I'm new to Windows 7 (Ultimate). I've NEVER allowed Windows, or office to auto update, so I turn that feature off. However, for some reason, after I check for Office updates, MS Update turns on auto updates. I turn it off, check updates, and it turns it on again.

How can I prevent it from happening?

I just caught mine doing that as well. You just have to remember to turn automatic updates off again after doing an update.

In my book, this is unethical to say the least, and possibly illegal. I say this because they (M$) is attempting to sneak in unwanted updates onto my computer. For example, when I used XP, I WILL NOT install Silverlight, Windows Genuine Notification, Desktop search, and a few others.

If you don't use update at all, I don't think automatic updates turns itself back on. I prefer to do things on my own schedule, and rarely do the updates. I did recently update both of my seven machines, and while the 7 Professional machine didn't do it, the 'Ultimate' machine had automatic updates turned ON afterwards.

I'm pretty certain that as long as you don't use the Windows Update, Automatic Updates will NOT turn itself back on again.

You can set it to check for updates without downloading them. I have never had this turn off.
