Windows 7: problem with installation of updates during shutdown

i've just managed to troubleshoot a friend's windows update problem and already receiving update since around 2AM last night. because i need to rest when it was around 4AM, i chose to shut down and that's when it runs/installs update before shutting down. just before i went to sleep, update 48 of 88 was being installed. this morning around 8AM, update 49 of 88 is being installed and right now it is still running, time is 11:02AM. is this normal or do I have to interfere. help pls. os is 7 ultimate sp1
