Question Windows Activation + Universal Disc

    - I would like to make a universal windows disc by removing ei.cfg from the iso I downloaded. But if I do that will that dvd work with my windows OEM key I got with my laptop?
    - Same question but now that I would change "retail" (underneath "channel") in the ei.cfg file to "OEM".

    Help is very much appreciated.

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Providing you use the same version of Windows as the OEM version you can indeed use the OEM product key.

Thanks a lot. But that answers only half of my question. What I would like to know is if I can use my universal disc. It's been made universal by downloading a retail iso of win7 x64 professional and removing the ei.cfg file. Will it work if I use that disc and my oem key I got from my laptop? Thanks for helping so far.

    Yes, it will.

During the install you'll be prompted to select which version you want to install.

Just highlight the one applicable to your setup i.e. if your computer had Home Premium installed then you need to highlight Home Premium from your Universal installer and use your COA product key.

This tutorial should be of help if you need it.

Yes, it will activate. It may require a call to Microsoft, but you will talk to a machine and put in the numbers the machine gives you and it will activate. As Seavixen said, it must be the same version as your OEM sticker is for.

Multiple Windows 7, 1 Product Key

I was wondering, by using the Universal Windows disk, Can I use the original key for them all? I want to use 7 Pro 64 and Home Premium on two computers, but I have a key for WinPro 7 x86. Ideas?

You can only activate the version your Key is for. If your Key is for Windows Pro, you can only activate Windows Pro. If your other computers have keys for Home Premium, you can install Home Premium and activate that.

The key that is on the COA sticker on your PC is YOUR key. The original OEM key is a generic key that the OEMs use for mass activation. So when it comes to activation time, use the key from the COA sticker - which goes only with the PC where the sticker is.
