Windows 7: Windows update installations continue to fail

I ran dell's Pre-boot System Assessment (holding the Function [FN] key while the computer was off, and pressing the power button while simultaneously releasing the Function key). The following error was found:
  • Error Code -142 | Msg: Error Code 2000-0142 | Msg: Hard Drive 0 - self test unsuccessful. Status: 79
I contacted dell support and they said the issues I've been having are due to my faulty hard drive. I couldn't even look at the properties when right-clicking on My Computer. It even said that dxdiag (in the run command) was not a valid win32 application.

Thanks for all your help.

No problem, if purchasing a new drive consider using a Linux LiveCD to recover your data. I've had a great deal of luck in installing Windows fresh to a new drive and installing a drive that Windows couldn't read as a secondary then booting from a Linux live cd and recovering my user data from the unreadable Windows drive.

You may not be able to save all your data, but in more than 1 instance I was able to recover 40 gigs worth of data from an unreadable drive under Windows.

Best of luck to you.
