Windows 7 - Determining whether OEM or Retail via MGADiag

In response to Uninstalling/Deactivating Product key number for windows 7. Attempting to determine if my installation of windows 7 is OEM or retail. I was told to run MGADiag and post in a new thread but I wasn't sure how much of the information to leave in. I was told the second group in the product ID was the important part so I censored everything but those.

Part highlighted in yellow shows OEM if your Windows is OEM, 3 digits if it is Retail.

It is Retail - although I can't tell whether it's an Upgrade or a Full license (I assume from the fact that you say this is a custom build, that it's a Full license)

You can happily move that to a new machine - you will need to re-activate by phone.
FWIW, there's nothing 'confidential' about anything in the report so there's no need to censor it.

The Disk(s) should have a description on them - which would tell you if it was an Upgrade.

If you don't mind me asking, how long have you owned this PC and where did you buy it from? I Googled xxxxx-838-xxxxxxx-xxxxx and it looks like 838 is Technet/MSDN version? If you bought that PC new you may have gotten ripped off. Is there a COA sticker on the PC?

It is NOT an MSDN copy - MSDN Win 7 Pro copies have CID in the 22x region.
Since it's a Retail Key, the age of the PC is irrelevant - but check the report for the BIOS date if you like
Again - since it's a Retail license, there will be no COA sticker on the PC.

If you buy a Retail copy of Windows 7 of the shelf at say Staples it doesn't come with a COA sticker? 838 just seemed weird to me so thats why I Googled it. I wasn't sure how accurate the info was so I didn't link to it. The content in that web page may have been against forum rules too. I just wanted to give the OP a heads up in case he did get ripped off thats all.

A Retail copy of Windows comes with a completely different sticker - which is already stuck either to a card or (more usually) to the inside of the fancy case that Widows comes in. This is because the Licenses can be moved to a new machine if required, so there's no point in tying the sticker to the one machine.

OEM System Builder copies are the one which come with a 'normal' COA sticker which should be attached to the machine concerned, since the Key is locked to hat machine

Volume licenses come with very little - and if you purchase WIndows online from MS, you can only buy Retail (Full or upgrade), because the Key comes by email, therefore there's no sticker.
