Thanks, Bear!
to answer your questions.... the Pause button is greyed out - presumably because Indexing is not actively doing anything anyhow

(@Joan - MSE is updating normally. The listing of updates in the History shows no problems getting them - but they don't appear in Installed Updates anyhow<g>)

I must admit, I haven't done the resets - I'll do those now and report back in a few minutes

Done - no change

In the end, the only thing that worked was renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder - which I was *really* trying to avoid, but at least things are all functional now.

Thanks everyone for the assist (the prize for the winner, however goes to PABear in the WU forums on Answers - see the thread here - 0x80070005 error searching for updates - Microsoft Answers )

Nah - I don't think so, as I ripped it out by the roots as soon as I originally booted the machine.
I suspect that it was just my footling around in there a couple of weeks ago that broke it

Offline updates spend enormous time "searching for updates on this..."
I do a lot of offline updating from my own store. Many of the updates prepare for installation by "searching for updates to this computer". I suppose this is to examine the need for and suitability of the update. The first update searches pretty quickly, but then it's very slow - something like 5...
