Try downloading and installing the Sysyem Updates Readiness Tool, which attempts to fix updating problems.

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [August 2011] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

I've given you the link for the 64-bit version of Windows 7 as your specs say that's what you're using.

Just in case... please run an MGADiag report

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
    - **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
    How to Tell - Home

Please also open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands

    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
    SC QC WUAUSERV
    SC QC BITS

copy and paste the response into your reply (click on the black/white icon top left of the window, click on Edit...>Select All, and hit the Enter key to copy the whole thing to the clipboard, you can then paste it to your response).

No - what I wanted was what I asked for - not just a pretty picture of the front page.

That report looks fine - so there's no apparent problem with Validation that could be interfering with WU.

So far everything looks OK - I can't see what service the error is complaining about

    Please try the following -
Reboot - and allow 5 minutes before touching the machine after logon
open an Elevated Command Prompt window
    run the following command
    SC QUERY TYPE= SERVICE >servlist.txt

then attach the file C:\Windows\System32\servlist.txt to your response.
