To anyone that can help me out:

I purchased a windows anytime upgrade key and upgraded my system from windows 7 home premiuim to windows 7 ultimate now when my windows tries to update I get this: (See image titled "message")

To bring you up to speed as to what I've done so far:
  1. I ran sfc\scannow and no errors were found
  2. I downloaded the hotfixes and apllied them and still could not update
  3. I tried to do a system restore to the point before I upgraded, but I could not perform one because all of my previous attempts to update windows automatically creates a system restore and all the restore points were within a 24 hour period
  4. I installed a system update readiness tool as per "windows help and support" dialogue box
Really, I feel like I've done my homework and I've exhausted my efforts as to how to fix this problem. I'm currently going to school for computers and so I really like to apply what I learn in real world situations, but this one has got me stumped!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Read this instructions carefully and proceed:

3. On the Get important updates for installation page, we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. You will need an Internet connection to get installation updates.
4. On the Type your product key for activation page, we strongly recommend that you type your 25-character product key to help avoid problems during activation.
5. On the Please read the license terms page, if you accept the license terms, click I accept the license terms.
6. On the Which type of installation do you want? page, click Upgrade to begin the upgrade. You might see a compatibility report.
7. Follow the instructions.
Note: If your installation disk does not include SP1, and you are updated to it, then you will have to uninstall it before performing an upgrade install. Start -> Control Panel -> Programs -> View installed updates, then select Service Pack for Microsoft Windows and click Uninstall.

It is always advisable to backup any and all important data before proceeding with any major changes to your system. Please see: Methods for backing up your files.
Always make sure you have the means to reinstall your programs, either through an install disk or having access to the installation files.

I would prefer you try an upgrade installation and input your newly purchased product key which will install Windows 7 Ultimate.

AZO,
The problem to your solution is that I bought this laptop from Best Buy 3 years ago and they never gave me any installation disks. I'm not sure what to do from here or if there is an alternate route to take? If you have any more avenues to explore I would be more than willing.

I would be more than happy to post my checksur.log, but when I tried to run it again it would not install. After looking countless days to try to find the log from the first time I ran it, I think I found it!

I've attached the log and I hope it helps!

Let me know if I could do anything else. I would really like to get this fixed or just go back to my home premium windows version.

Hmm - that's not pretty
The CheckSUR.log file should be in the same place as the one you posted (which is created as a backup of the old log when you run CheckSUR again) - but if the install fails, it may not have been able to create the log.

The manufacturer MUST (to comply with the terms of their contrat with MS) have provided some means to recover the original system - often either a Recovery Partition, or the ability to create a set of DVD's to reinstall. However, these will only clean install the OS and apps originally provided, they cannot be used for a repair install.
You can, however, download the appropriate DVD from Digital River - see this list - Windows 7 Direct Download Links

You will need to do a Repair Install, using the Key from your COA sticker (the one you may find using a tool such as Magaical JellyBean will not work with a Retail disk).

Noel,
After doing some research, you are right about the the recovery partition, but like you said it would be a clean install and I would lose all my data. A clean install is not any option so I really had to be persistent and figure out why my my hotfix would not install and I found a breakthrough!! Come to find out that windows module installer service was stopped and is somehow stopped by default. Once I started the service I was able to install and run the hotfix and I have not a current attached checksur.log

I really hope this helps. If you find anything out, please let me know. I am also curious if there is a way to find out if my computer is hacked or has a bad virus? I know it's another issue for another time, but I found this folder just show up on my C drive. I've never seen it before and I'm not sure what it is. I've attached the zip file that's labeled "79b8f6f993ea881f6a62" I have a WPA2 secure wireless and I'm running Norton 360 as my antivirus but I just want to make sure my computer is not compromised. . .

Obviously, I want to keep this thread focused on fixing my update issues and I'm really excited to be able to get a checksur.log that will at least point us in the right direction. And hopefully in the end we can get this fixed. Noel, I really do appreciate your guidance and help with this and it helps me have a deeper understanding of troubleshooting as I progress through college for Information Systems.
