How can I upgrade from home premium to ultimate

I recently bought a new laptop which came installed with win 7 home premium. On my desktop machine that it is replacing I have win 7 ultimate installed.

I want to transfer the ultimate license to the laptop but when I tried to perform an install from the W7 ultimate CD on the laptop I was directed to the windows store to purchase a W7 ultimate upgrade.

How can I use my W7 ultimate disk to upgrade to W7 ultimate on my laptop?

    jhob,

you'd need an ultimate upgrade package to do that. With a full ultimate license, all you can do is a complete reinstall on the laptop.

Your upgrade from the desktop is probably a single license that you cannot use again on the laptop. Have to buy a new license.

You say your desktop has Windows 7 Ultimate, but did the machine come with that pre-installed or do you have a retail license of Ultimate ?

If your copy of Ultimate came with the desktop it is probably an OEM copy and would be tied to the desktop so that you wouldn't be able to use it again, even if the desktop went belly up.

If your copy of Ultimate is retail then as long as it is taken off the desktop you could install it on the laptop using it's own product key that you have.

Hmmm, I thought that might be the answer. Rather annoying that I can't upgrade to the copy of ultimate that I legally own...

It's a retail license. I know that I could flatten my laptop and install ultimate, what I was hoping for was some sort of in-place upgrade much like a repair install.

    1. You can use your retail copy of Ultimate that you own - but only on 1 system at any given time (unless it is a multi system license).

    2. An upgrade install is possible with an upgrade disc - but that can be very messy and is not recommended. You can run into all kinds of problems down the way. Many people that did an upgrade install initially ended up to reinstall after all because they had encountered too many problems.

Btw: you can make a clean install with an upgrade disc. Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
