Solved Service Pack 1 won't install

I have tried to install SP1 on my laptop every time Windows update lists it to download, it fails. Other updates install as expected.

Curiously, I have Windows 7 on a desktop system and it installed just fine.

Is there a way to get this update in an ISO file and install it manually?

You can also download and install the System Updates Readiness Tool, you haven't said whether you have the 32-bit version of Windows or the 64-bit version so I'll give the links for both versions of SURT.

First clean all temp files and try again ...

Download TFC by Old Timer TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer - Geeks to Go Forums and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista/Windows 7 right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.

I've tried all the the suggestions here: TFC, manual download.

All failed to SP1 installed.

I've run sfc/scannow, nothing reported.

Receiving this error message: Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Searched for that error code, and read a suggested Windows log file,attached

When using Windows Updates, do you include SP1 when downloading other updates?

If so, try SP1 on its own.

You might also want to temporarily disable any anti-virus software as well.

It may or may not be significant, but where did you get your laptop Windows 7 from or was it pre-installed?

I used the 3 license bundle upgrade. 2 systems XP to Windows 7, 1 system Vista to Windows 7. It's the latter I'm having trouble with. But this system has had a complete reinstall since.

If you have tweaked and changed the boot screen or the log on screen of your laptop the SP1 may not install. In that case restore the default screen and try again.

In spite of all the years I've been dealing with computers....pre Win3.1 DOS....I'm still very bad with backups.

Chalk it up to luck. In all those years, I've had only one catastrophic crash with data loss, and tend to copy user stuff to an external HDD. No HDD image backups.

So no I don't have one.

I've been trying to install SP1 since it was released with no success.

My first SP1 failure occurred 9/27/2011, according to the update record. My restore points don't go back far enough. They only go back to mid January, 2012.

Will a Repair Install fix this? There is a factory partition on the HDD, but that will take me back to Vista, which is was what the laptop came with.

Hank, any luck? I am having trouble also but I manage to download the pack, but then when the computer reboots it says there has been a failure and I must wait while my computer is reconfigured. I have tried at least 14 times, downloaded the system update readiness, turned off AVG, downloaded alone, and I still get the error about I am trying to download something assigned to another name, whatever that means. I will try this idea about untweaking my logon screen as I disabled alot of Aero. I will get the error name and repost here, any other ideas let me know your success.

Okay, Duh, didn't see page two. I just tried downloading again and got error code 8071A90 which led me to read about that code, haven't tried in safe mode yet as they say to try. When it tries to configure it restarts and then says "the function attempted to use a name that is reserved for use by another transaction" (hunh?!)
and when it reboots again says ERROR_TRANSACTIONAL_CONFLICT(0X80071a90)
Any ideas how to outsmart this sneaky service pack1? I'm on Windows Pro, 32 bit,
