    There is nothing like trying in the safe mode with network support. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Avast! Free that way and I had thought that it wouldn't install.

    Most AV's will install happily in Safe Mode - they use custom installers.
    All Updates for Windows, etc, that I know of use the various forms of the Windows Installer service - which doesn't run in Safe mode.
    I suppose it's possible to tickle the system into running it - but I'd be hesitant to trust the results.

    Running msiexec (the Windows Installer service) in safe mode is actually quite easy - rather than re-write (admittedly a quick, small guide), I'll link the pre-existing post here:

    TrustedInstaller is already a safe mode service (you can see it if you look in the SafeBoot key's list).

Hey Guys, Just tried to do a UPDATE and it says 75 updates are available and are ready for download. I click install updates- says its downloading updates and says 0 downloaded for 3 hours .. Any thoughts of how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Thanks for looking. I am usually able to fix most problems I have with my pc through searching for similar problems on here, but Im really stuck here :/ I keep being prompted to install these same updates on my pc, running windows 7 ultimate x32, over and over again. KB2487367...
