    There is nothing like trying in the safe mode with network support. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Avast! Free that way and I had thought that it wouldn't install.

    Most AV's will install happily in Safe Mode - they use custom installers.
    All Updates for Windows, etc, that I know of use the various forms of the Windows Installer service - which doesn't run in Safe mode.
    I suppose it's possible to tickle the system into running it - but I'd be hesitant to trust the results.

    Running msiexec (the Windows Installer service) in safe mode is actually quite easy - rather than re-write (admittedly a quick, small guide), I'll link the pre-existing post here:

    TrustedInstaller is already a safe mode service (you can see it if you look in the SafeBoot key's list).
