Like serveral others have said.
I'd suggest you not to turn of the auto updates. Since there can be vital updates and sometimes even tweeks to make your computer actually work a little faster. But yers he is kind of right. Having the updates does use a little more power from the computer. Since some tweeks is optimised towards using as much power as it possibly can. But don't forget that they always try to reduce the load as well so it adds up in most cases. Unless you bought your computer in the early 90's I'd say to keep them online. But no they are NOT nessecary but if you would ever get problems with any program and you call any of the software devs in ask of help they will and should always ask you if you have all drivers as well as your OS up to date to match the latest drivers.
If you don't they will tell you to install them and come back after that.
