Windows 7 is updating but does not finish

My Dell is updating Windows. It says "Please do not power off or unplug or machine. Installing update 1 of 1". I turned off the computer after several hours, when the message started displaying. I turned the computer back on the next morning. The screen display still reads the same message. How do I resolve this problem?

    Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It would appear an update or updates hasn't installed correctly.

Check this link for the System Updates Readiness Tool, which addresses problems such as yours.

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

Thanks for the info. But how do I get off of the update display screen and reboot my computer?

You should be able to cancel the updates.

If that doesn't do the trick you'll have to force a shutdown by pressing the power button until your computer shuts down.

When you restart your computer you may well be prompted as to which option you want. Choose Start Normally then download and run SURT as I suggested.
