Turn off Automatic Updates (Control Panel, Windows Update, Change Settings. In the drop down under Important Updates, select Never check for updates.

Go back to Windows updates and click on Check for Updates. See if that works. If yes, then turn Automatic Updates back on when done.

Some updates take awhile, can you post a shot of the available updates. Change the settings of your updates to: check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. Check for updates again.

You could also try turning off the windows update service in start>allprograms>administrative tools>services then turn it back on.

    Or through the control panel.
