Windows update only works if firewall dissabled

Hi there windows update wont work unless firewall is dissabled.I have added svchost.exe to the firewall exclusion list and it works. Is this safe to do or is there a better solution.I have tried windows fixit but that will not work either because the dns server is blocked thanks for any advice.

Can you post back with a few more details about the problem. There shouldn't be any need to stop the firewall, by the way what firewall are you talking about is it the inbuilt one or one that you have added ?

Can you tell us what error messages you get when you try to install updates and how long has it been going on, what anti-virus program do you run and is it up to date.

Which updates are you trying to install, is it just any or something in particular ?

Don't forget the experts can't see your machine so need as many details as possible so they can help you solve the problem, oh and welcome to the forum.

As well as Joan's valid questions above...

It would better enable us to help you if you would fill in your System Specs please.

Hi Joan , i am refering to the windows 7 inbuilt firewall. It wont perform any windows updates but i can update other programs like adobe etc.The error code i get is Windows update error 80072ee7.I am running Kaspersky security and it is up to date.Windows will not update with the Kaspersky disabled either.I have run an analysis with reimage pc repair online and it comes up with windows capi2 has crashed, is this relevant to my problem? This pc is two weeks old and the problem has been there from day one.Hope you can help and thanks for the reply regards roger.

I've found this link that refers to your error code, don't know if you've had a look at it but see if it helps at all.

Sorry about that, I'm afraid you'll have to see if one of the others has any idea I'll put in a request for help.

I'm no expert but if I find anything else I'll pass it on.

Try running the System Update Readiness Tool.

Download: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [February 2012] - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

If that doesn't work you may have other damaged or corrupt system files. Run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two this tutorial.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Thank you for filling in some of your System Specs.

Have you by chance used a Registry Cleaner/ Optimizer on your new 2 week old computer?

Did this new computer come with Kaspersky pre installed?

It may be quicker & easier / best to do a Clean Install.
