Windows 7: SP1 wont appear in Windows Update...

SP1 wont appear in Windows Update...

I cannot get the SP1 update to show in the windows update centre, I have installed the Readiness tool suggested to fix updates from Microsoft, but as far as I can tell that hasnt helped.. I have got windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have not installed any other updates as of yet. Thought I would wait until SP1 came out.

I dont want to download it from Microsoft download centre as the file is pretty big (and in relation to my internet cap, it is..) and as MS suggests, I should be downloading it from windows update instead...

I will appreciate all help and comments...

=> So this is the RTM (Release To Manufacturer) version without any windows update?

I would advise you to install your updates as soon as possible as you won't get offered SP1 until you do.

SP1 needs certain updates to be already installed before you install the service pack itself.

Also, the standalone version of SP1 is a lot bigger than getting it via Windows Updates.

@Kaktussoft - Yes it is

@seavixen32
- Ok I see what you mean... should I install all of the updates? or are their some specific ones that I need? I have had some problems in the past where windows becomes unstable after I have updated it and I end up reinstalling a brand new copy of it..

SP1 will not be offered until you install most of the updates offered before SP1 thats why service pack download from windows update is small you already have many of the updates included in the SP so windows update downloads just what you need. (if youre updating from RTM you may consider downloading sp installer download size amount may get close to that of windows update)
IMHO its very dangerous to not update windows...
you have many things to protect yourself from updates that has problems first manual selective install (install update one by one and test it) and you have system restore that can restore your windows to the state before update (if that update has some problems).
although i never had serious problems with windows 7 updates.. had some with windows xp..

Well is seems like I will have to update windows in order to get SP1 to come up. I will take your advice and install them one at a time and see (if any this time around) if any cause problems. I found that the problems usually occur later on after the updates have been on for a while.... strange that I never had problems with xp, but always had a few with Windows 7...

Good decision.

One at a time does make it a lengthy process, but it gives you a fighting chance to discover which update, if any, is causing you a problem.

Once you're up to speed with your updates SP1 should be offered to you before long.

You say you're having problems with Windows 7 that you didn't get with Windows XP. What sort of problems?

As well as Windows updates you also need to make sure your hardware has the best drivers too.

Awesome . Some of the problems I can remember off the top of my head, are things like stability issues, while im busy gaming with the updates installed in Windows 7, the whole computer would just restart without warning, and then obviously without the updates its perfectly fine... Um things like sound not working properly, my graphics card driver crashing... and there was a few others as well.

Lol and as far as updating my hardware drivers, more specifically my graphics card, the new driver causes it to crash during my games and sometime while in other windows applications, so needless to say I also havent updated those in a while... :/

If your hardware crashes after you've updated its drivers, you're best just to roll back to the previous one, which you can do in device manager.

NVIDIA are notorious for releasing new drivers that don't appear to have been fully tested first. For example, I recently updated to their graphics driver version 296.10 and had to ditch it because Windows Media Center wouldn't play ball when I tried to watch TV with it.

I have had to do that with ATI as well... the one one and only driver that works for me is the one that came on the CD with my card xD (which I got about 1 and a half years ago :/). ah sigh....
