Essentials update Last night I had an update for Windows Essentials or maybe Microsoft essentials. I checked in windows updates but it wasn't listed there so I clicked the update icon and as it was doing it's thing, I cancelled it because I realized I don't have MS essentials. I only have Windows Defender and Windows Live Mail 2011 on the computer. But now, am wondering if I did the wrong thing.
If I do need it because of defender and wlm...could you please tell me how and where I can find this update now?
I was going to run a scan with PSI from Secunia to see if maybe they would find something that was not updated, but I couldn't find the one that you just scan but don't have to download and install it. Could you please direct me to the scanner?
Answers to these two questions would be most appreciated. Thanks. | My System Specs |

veegee
MSSE is a free AV from microsoft for win 7 and that one replaces Windows defender in this win 7 release if installed and WD will be back with the release of windows 8.
So it's better to let WU to handle needed updates. Microsoft Security Essentials Product Information
In this site please read the product informations.
Good luck

Secunia is not an ant-virus in the conventional sense - and Defender in Windows 7 is not an Anti-Virus in any sense of the term.
What actual Anti-Virus do you have installed?
if the answer is 'None' then you should back up your data to external storage, and then reformat and reinstall your OS. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude! Answers to these two questions would be most appreciated. Thanks. You received that MS Live Esentials update because you have Windows Live Mail which is one of the prorams offered in Windows Live Essentials. There is a new WLM version.... build 15.4.3555.0308
Have a look at your WLM version....
Open WLM > click the blue button at top left > About > what version does it say ?
I bet yours is not the same.
You should have accepted the updates. It would have updated your WLM, and it wouldn't and couldn't update any Windows Live Essentials programs that you don't have. You have nothing to worry about accepting the update. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Acer Aspire 7741Z OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1 CPU Intel Pentium P6200, Cores 2, 2.13 GHz Memory 4 GB Graphics Card Intel HD Sound Card unknown Monitor(s) Displays 17.3 inches Screen Resolution 1600 x 900 Hard Drives 640 GB, 5400 PRM |

veegee,
You could wait for next time it prompts you for an WLEssentials update. It will. I had this happened to me. I know.
Or,
You can go online and download it... essentials update Thanks for everyone's help.
I ran the Secunia OSI scan, result was 'no errors'. Ran repair on windows essentials in ctrl panel and some time later the update reappeared, so clicked on it and it disappeared. Did another repair but it never returned.
I am aware that OSI is not an AV. What I meant was the only MS programs I use are windows defender and WLM (& unfortunately MS firewall also).
I think what concerned me the most was how I got stuck with WLM 2011 in the first place; because MS said it was a "very important" update and I stupidly didn't research it before accepting it (an update with a jillion other junk that I would never use), and I thought what more goodies might be in store with this update. Just give me the old windows mail and I would be happy.
t-4-2 Thanks for explaining this - has sure set my mind at ease. My WLM version is 15.4.3538.0513. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Compaq-Presario OS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II x2 215 Processor Memory 4.00 GB Graphics Card Nividia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Monitor(s) Displays Acer 21.5" - H213H 1920x1080 Hard Drives 466 GB 2 processor cores Other Info Avast free|SAS|MBAM pro|Spywareblaster|Spybot|Windows Defender|Windows Firewall |

So, your WLM is out-dated.
You want to wait for next update or you want to download the current version now...... If you are only running with Windows Defender, then you have no antivirus - and that is almost criminal in this day and age, unless you are an expert.
I will refrain from adivsing a reformat/reinstall - gut it is something you should consider.
Whatever you do, you MUST install a proper Anti-Virus program, or you risk not only your own machine and data, but any machine yours comes into contact with in any way, and anyone whose email address or other data you have on file
There are many Free AV's out there - some good, some not so good. The ones I have experience of that are good, are MSE and Avast. I have started to actively dislike AVG, because of bloat. | My System Specs | | Computer type Laptop System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K52F OS Win 7 x64 Home Premium (and x86 VirtualBox VM) CPU i3 370M Motherboard Asus Memory 8GB - finally :) Graphics Card it's an i3, dude!
