Activation Period Expired, Key Blocked. How Do I Activate?

I purchased my Windows 7 Pro and installed it, thinking that I would activate it later, then didn't use the computer for some time. Now, when I attempt to activate, I'm told that my key has been blocked. The only solution I'm being offered is to purchase another key. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I got help once with a blocked key by calling WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) support at 1-866-530-6364. (That's for the US.) I was told that my key was blocked because it was listed as "returned". (It was purchased from the Microsoft Store online, and never returned by me.) I was given a new key.

I hope that you didn't buy one of those bargain Win7 packages, which came with keys from the MSDN. Microsoft tends to block those keys, when their use is discovered. (I have no idea whether those keys would show as "retail", as yours did.)

Are you sure the characters are being inputted correctly? It's very easy to transpose a B and an 8, or a 0 and a O. If you didn't buy it from a shady source then that's likely the prob.

Otherwise contact the seller or MS Customer Service to validate the Key.

Your installation is using an MSDN Key.
Unless you are an MSDN subscriber, you are not entitled to use the Key – and whoever sold it to you was not entitled to do so.

Your Windows Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account.
You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

Please read the following stickies.... ............................

The pirates have got VERY good at this over the past few years, as the price of equipment for manufacturing the packages drops, and as factories open in less well-policed countries.

How do I get rid of the pop-ups?

Thanks Noel. Too much time has now expired now for me to have any recourse to the seller. I guess I just have to live with what I have. Is there any way of getting rid of the pop-ups that Genuine Windows keeps putting on my screen?

Not without purchasing a legal copy of Windows. From what I can tell of the machine, it was originally shipped without any Windows license (probably with Linux installed instead) - which means that you'd have to purchase a Full Retail of copy of Win7 Pro to be able to swap in the new Key.

Until then you can use Windows 8 Consumer Preview for free. It's not intended for a production computer but is quite polished and actually a little faster once you tame the unusual Start Screen intended for touch screens.
