    New Laptop, corrupt Windows files, Update not working.

    Hi there
    I just got my new Laptop today (ASUS K93SM), deleted all the preinstalled ASUS crap and tried doing a Windows Update when it got stuck at "Checking for updates", "Preparing to download" or "Downloading" (with 0KB progress all the time).
    I tried only selecting one Update at a time but it didn't change anything.

    Then I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it responded that some Windows files are corrupted. The laptop didn't come with any Windows DVD though so am I stuck in this situation???

    Filtered SFC logs in the attachments

    greetings

    i believe that windows update has it's own log file. Check that for a better idea what's going on. This is overly obvious but make sure you are connected to to internet sometimes I try to update computers at work but I find I forget to plug cable in or connect through aircard.

    hmmm.. try running the msft fixit tool in 'aggressive mode' if it allows this option : How do I reset Windows Update components?

    Do you have SP1??

    ALSO check your date and time to see if they're correct. (Stupid i know, but I fixed WU like this once)

    Date and time are set properly, SP1 is installed.

    I'll try running the msft fixit tool after I'm done with the System Restores.

    fuerchter,

    Read your laptop documentation.
    You are looking for info on how to perform a restore/recovery to factory conditions.

    Perform the restore.

    After system restored, use Win 7 Backup and Restore to make a system image backup so that you can recover in a more graceful fashion.

    Oh yes, you backup to an EXTERNAL USB drive.

    Make a system repair disc. You will need it for a restore of that system image if you have a disaster and for many other repair/restore operations.
    CREATE A SYSTEM REPAIR DISC

    START | type System Repair | Enter key | Create Disc button

    =========================================================

    After that, go to the asus site and check for a bios update, check for a chipset update, check for driver updates.

    To avoid give you a shock, I'll hold off on all of the other steps one should take until the above recommendations have been carried out.

    So the system restore didn't work I still got corrupt files. Going to try the suggestion with the fixit tool now first.

    //EDIT:
    Also I just got the laptop today I didn't do any updates in February.

    Fixit is apparently only Beta and I can't join it atm.

    I'll try to restore it to factory conditions.

    //EDIT2:
    After doing the System Restore I just wanted to try updating one update at a time again and this time it worked. I'll try to do more.

    //EDIT3:
    So it seems to work now again, thanks guys ^^
