.... looking at your list of services, it's pretty impressive, but I have to wonder why? Many of them actually do nothing on a default install anyhow - they are just enabled in case they are required. The effect on most systems would be almost negligeable.
In some cases it would be better not to have installed the related software in the first place

Still can't get it to work.

    [Edit]
Tried again after restarting, and it worked this time.
Though I can't imagine why-- I've typed this same combination 7-8 times already, and I don't remember changing it even once.

About those services-- the list goes on, with the ones that are on and that I don't dare try to disable. All except for 1-2 of the services there came pre-installed.
There are so many that are unnecessary-- do you happen to know how I could uninstall some of them? I definitely don't need at least 10-15 of them, and won't ever need them. (Biometric Service?? I've only seen one laptop that has that ability!)

And just wondering, did you mean the list I have disabled is impressive? Or did you mean the sheer number of services I have is impressive?

I gather you've managed to get it activated now?
Please post a new MGADiag report so that we can confirm that all is now OK.

Apart from bragging rights. I cna see no real reason for disabling that number of services - if for no other reason that there may come a time when you want to use them for a new piece of software or hardware.

take your exaple of the Biomteric service - this is used by a number of devices (mostly things like figerprint readers, which seem to have peaked a cuple of years ago, and are now in decline since the advent of tablet/slates which is strange since they would be VERY useful!) My older la ptop has one, and it was quite impressive what you could enable it to do.
Some of the services you've disabled I would consider essential - although they could be switched to Manual, rather than their original setting of Automatic(with or without the delayed start)

The only time such tweaks are likely to have a significantly beneficial effect is if the machine is starved of RAM (i.e. less than 1GB) where it would reduce the footprint, and consequently the amount of disk-swapping going on.

    Yes, the validation went through.

Disabling the automatic ones seem to give my (rather cheap) laptop a speed boost.
Though I admit, there really isn't any benefit from disabling any Manual services, I just don't like having stuff enabled that I don't use, and don't ever expect to.
I guess it's a bit of a placebo effect for me. Seeing stuff get turned off makes it seem like stuff runs just a little bit faster than before.

I'm curious as to what you could do with the biometric service--only thing I could think of was to use it for fingerprint scanning for security.

Tell me when I should label this thread as solved.

I think it is already solved thanks to Noel. You should now image your C (System Volume) Drive for the future. If you get into trouble again like the present one then you shall be able to restore the image within a few minutes and be back in business.

There's an awful lot you can do with just the fingerprint stuff - such as create macros based on a print which will run a set of programs at need.
Biometrics also covers things such as motion sensors and GPS, (I think!) - but my knowledge is very limited.

As far as your activation/validation problem is concerned, I think we'll be done if you pass validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - which will offer you MSE and IE9 if successful (you don't have to take them!)

Any good software for doing this? Or just System Restore? (I've never been a fan of System Restore...)

    Noel:
I was already offered MSE and IE9 before this problem occured, and I turned them down already. Don't like either of them. Thanks for the help! Restarted, and the "not genuine" message is gone.

Sysrem Restore is not very dependable as you have guessed already.

For imaging I use Acronis Disk Director and TrueImage Boot disk that I like very much but it is shareware. On this Forum many prefer Macrium Reflect Boot Disk which is free. I haven't used it but those who have say that it is about the best third party imaging software.

Some but not many prefer to use the Windows 7 native imaging software but others including myself find it crappy.

So you now make your choice. There is an excellent tutorial on Macrium in the tutorial section of these Forums.
