Windows Update Problem. And, Questions Re SP1 & Drivers

    Hello,

Re-installed a new HD after original one conked out.
    Most things work after re-install.

Running the 64 bit version of W7.

    a. Thought I would go to Windows Update, and see if there was anything to update now that I did the re-install.
Windows Update will not function, for some reason.

Msg. says; "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the Service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

I looked in Services, and for the line that says Windows Update, it shows "Started"

What's the problem, do you think ?

    b. Thought also that it would be a good idea to re-install the Service Pack update for W7, called SP1, I think.

From their site, it shows about a dozen download options.
Have no idea which is the one to use (I have the 64 bit version of Windows)

Which download on their site should I use, please ?

Looks like a formidable task to update with SP1. How necessary is it really ?

    c. Is there a simple way to check if all the Windows Drivers that are required are really installed ? If not, what should I do ?

    Thanks for help,
    Bob

    Hi Bob
Win 7-SP1 (kb976932)is a huge download, it's about 7400 GB, the best is to install it via windows updates.
And to learn more about SP1 and how to install it visit this site:

Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

The simple way to check for drivers is via control panel then device manager.

7400GB???!! If you get Service pack 1 in Windows Update, it won't need nearly that much room.

Use the Windows key and the Pause key; check and see if your system is still Genuine after changing hardware.

From OP: So, Why No Windows Update After New HD Install ?

    Hi,

    Thanks for help.

So, why do you think, that I cannot run, now, Windows Update at all after the
re-install of the new HD ?

    It used to run fine.

Something I need to check, or download separately, or...?

Would like to use it, per suggestions, to install SP1.

Thoughts on (please see the thread) ?

    Much thanks,
    Bob

You can download the 64-bit version of SP1 alone from here:

Download: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It's 903.2 MB. It's the next to last file in the list: windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

That's how I installed it, without using Windows Update. You don't need the other files in the list.

I don't know why Update is not working for you.

    Robert,
Looking back at your first post, I'm inclined to agree with some of your questioning.

Let's try to find out a couple of facts.

    1. IMMEDIATELY after you installed Win 7, did the computer work? Yes/No.

    2. Can you boot up your computer right now? Yes/No.

    3. Can you boot into Safe Mode? Yes/No.

Would you please supply a total of three yes or no answers.

To further help us to help you, would you please fill out your system specs. Use following write-up and the SPECCY tool which allows you copy with Ctrl+C to paste into your spec boxes using Ctrl+V.

    Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec
    (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

ADD the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
    “system manufacturer” block, for example,
    Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.
    ============================================
    thanks,
    karl
