Windows 7: Windows is not Genuine

System Restore may work at times - but often the problem has existed for some time before becoming apparent, and may have been apparent for months before the OP gets around to posting about it. In such cases System Restore can create more problems than it solves.

Bear in mind that the WAT update scans the machine only once every 90 days (max) and only complains when a fault is not fixable by the limited self-repair mechanisms it has.

Unless the cause of the error is obvious, it's better to rebuild the licensing store that just to do a straight Key change, as the store may be slightly corrupted and cause the new Key to fail, or allow the current Key to come 'alive' again and so avoid use of the COA Key.

I'm uncertain as to whether the Licensing store is even covered by System Restore anyhow. It's not as easy to check what is and isn't covered by SR nowadays, as it was in ME where it was a simple xml file with a few hundred entries, and I have to admit I don't even know where to start (yet!)

Just registered to say thanks to NoelDP for this (working) solution. I had tried everything else including putting a new legit license key into My Computer -> Properties. I even tried installing tools which are supposed to disable this annoying prompt (which failed to do so).
This is yet further proof that DRM technology hurts legitimate users more than it does those pirating the software - they just develop and distribute cracked copies of the software. DRM technology is a futile and failed attempt to prevent an inevitable hazzard of producing digital media. For the sake of all the legitimate users out there, I wish software producers would realize that.
I'm not promoting piracy, but I am condeming DRM. If nothing else, it drives up costs of software without any real benefit. And when you raise the price of software, guess how that effects piracy.... Less people are willing or able to pay for it and the end result? Less copies sold and more people pirating.
Ok. Didn't mean to rant like that, but I had to vent a bit after being falsely accused of having a "non-genuine" Windows.

WGA has absolutely nothing to do with DRM!
They are very different processes, and totally different technologies
I'm not fond of either - but I can see no way around their existence until people voluntarily pay the originators their fair fees (i.e. never!)

Hi Noel,

Many thanks for your post, I've spent hours trying to resolve a near identical issue and following your simple steps has resolved it !

Looks like, despite being some 3 years ago, it's still as relevent today!

Thanks
