New Windows 7 install onto SSD freezes after first 3 updates

I just got a new SSD (Kingston HyperX 120gb) and I installed a working copy (I say working copy because it's installed on a regular hard drive as well and that one is fine) of windows 7 pro (64). Everything went quickly and smooth, no errors.

I then let windows run the updates, and the first 3 updates occur (2 security updates and something else) and those go successfully. An Nvidia update then occurs automatically and that one fails (it's just a graphics driver update though which I plan on doing manually after)

I'm assuming the 1st 2 security updates are what is causing the issue, they were listed as pending and needed the computer to restart to finish installing them. When I restart though, windows hangs after the initial loading screen with the blue default background and windows logo. I've left it for an hour and it still hangs.

I tried erasing the hard drive again, all partitions erased and reformatted it, did a clean install, same exact result.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

Update: on the second install after hanging for a while, the screen went into sleep mode, and then when it came back on the mouse was working but it's still hanging at the background (on 1st install the mouse wasn't working either)

I can right click and bring up the little menu that pops up when right clicking the desktop, so it seems it's hanging at the desktop and only the desktop background is loading

Update 2: I was able to boot into safe mode with networking, none of the devices are giving me an error in device manager. I tried checking the windows update history but I can't even access windows update (clicking it just does nothing)

Update 3: I uninstalled the display in device manager (my Nvidia graphics cards) and deleted the drivers and windows booted up fine, so it seems the automatic Nvidia GTX 480 update is causing the issue for some reason. I'm going to proceed installing the rest of the updates now and I'll report back here if I have an issue. Also now that I was able to finally see the update history:

ATK system ATK0110 ACPI utility 0 successful
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB979309) - successful
nVidia - Display, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 - failed - error 80070103
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based systems (KB2621440) - successful

    UPDATE 4:
ok so all updates went successfully, but every time the video cards try to install drivers I get a hang at the desktop. I've tried disabling the automatic driver update, and disabling user account control, then I installed using the nvidia latest drivers from their website for the gtx 480 and I'm STILL getting a hang at the desktop

    UPDATE 5: I tried
    - disabling automatic updates
    - disabling automatic driver installation through both typing in "change device installation settings" method and the "gpedit.msc" method, and i deleted everything in the windows update download folder, and windows STILL INSTALLS the cards automatically. Then the drivers fail and when I go to install the real nvidia drivers from nvidia's site I get a hang on desktop.

The video cards work fine though on my other hard drive

    Any suggestions here? Thanks

SOLVED - windows nvidia drivers from update were defaulting to extend my display onto another display that doesn't exist

I changed the setting and it all works now...very weird.
