    I don't think it's a non-genuine problem (although I do see why you're asking!)

I suspect that it's actually a permissions prblem on the root of C:

GroundedDreams - please run the following command and post the results.

    ICACLS C:\
    DIR C:\
    DIR C:\ /ah

Here are some instructions to make life easier (especially if it takes some goes-around!)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

GroundedDreams - plese follow the given instructions in future - it makes life easier for everyone.

Your results show that you have at least had AVG installed, as well as a large number of programs which appear not to be WIn7 compliant.
What other Security software has been or is installed, since the last format/reinstall? What AV came pre-installed on this machine?

I just entered the command didn't really follow instructions since knew what to do and you are only looking at the return not entering it somewhere so thought picture would do fine. Well AVG is installed if you are just looking at the folder in C but that is just AVG link scanner and should not be conflicting with MSE. I do not think I had any other security software installed since my last reinstall.

EDIT: It also is not only MSE that is the problem it is other software updates and new installs where they want a file (C:/............................./).

If you have AVG installed at the same time as MSE then they WILL conflict - it is not possible to have two full AV products installed and running without problems.
Uninstall one or the other, and then run the removal tool for the one uninstalled. It may also be necessary to uninstall teh other and run its removal tool prior to reinstalling the preferred one.

It is a link scanner as said which is not a full client it only checks sites in browsers basically an add-on but it is installed like a typical program this feature is not something MSE does so unless you really have done research on this I am fairly sure they are not conflicting at all since do different task completely. I also do not believe MSE is the big picture it is the 7 updates currently failing to install and installing new programs can have similar issues.

So you are saying that you've never had AVG installed, but you do have AVG Secure Search enabled?
That's odd - because I have just installed the Secure Search tool on a machine - and it does not produce the folder seen in your DIR reports.
I suspect that you installed the full AVG package, and then uninstalled or disabled everything except the search assistant/toolbar.
Please completely uninstall all AVG products then run the AVG Remover - you can then reinstall the Secure Search tool on its own if you want.
