Put 7 Hom Prem 32b on after only windows updates computer slows down

I have a customer laptop that had Windows Vista Home Premium (build 6000) I installed windows 7 home premium and the computer runs great all the drivers work but after i do the windows update the computer slows to a halt and any program comes up as not responding. I have restored the computer back to no updates. At this point my customer just wants to use this computer just for simple tasks like web , email and some media. I would like to know what updates i can leave out so that this will not happen again.

.NET updates need to do a LOT of housework after installation - and will often slow a machine down for half an hour or so after reboot.
Have you tried just leaving the machine to do its thing overnight, after the reboot following updating?
