You may succeed if you first uninstall Max Payne 3 and then install SP1. After that you may again install Max Payne 3.

Are you sure that SP1 is not already installed having been slip-streamed with your installer DVD. Please check at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System on the top of the right panel.

Sometimes SP1 needs a little help from MS in order to go! What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Another thing you will want to do when going to install the service pack is to first disable any system protections such as antivirus and any firewall program you have running! That will stall any attempt to install SP1.

Thread can be locked. The problem was solved by just disabling antivirus protection. :)
