Windows 7: Windows Security Updates download but won't install

I ran Windows Update last night and found 6 security updates required for Windows as well as others for products like Office. The updates for office download just fine however the updates for Windows will download but then they won't install and I get this error code message. Sorry but I don't have the code number, I even went so far is to download the latest Internet Explorer cumulative security update that Windows update said I needed, and after downloading it to my desktop it failed to install. The only way I was able to get past this was to restore an image I created in early June with Norton ghost and ran Windows update after restoring the old image. All of the updates at that point installed perfectly including the most recent ones. So here's my issue, I think I've solved this problem but I can't figure out what the problem was. For the record, I have checked my computer and it was never one of the computers infected with that recent DNS malware issue. The most recent image that I installed that then these updates wouldn't work with was a pristine image and showed perfect after running Malwarebytes as well as Norton antivirus. Is it possible something connected to updating Windows specific components may have been corrupted that could've caused this?
