    Got it!

    When I search "2008" I get this list:

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.3072...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.21022
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - KB2467174 - ...
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - KB2467174 - ...

    Other programs installed at around the same time what are the ones immediately above and below? Were they installed on the same date? If so then they may well have been installed by the same program:

    Immediately above: Apple Application Support (same date)
    Immediately below: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable -x64 9.0.3072...

    (note: these pairs are different for every link from the list I highlight)

    On a separate note:

    I ran Windows Update again, and there is 1 new update (Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1XML Editor (KB2251487). However, the installation (within Windows Update) gets stuck. The progress bar does not move, at all.............strangely similar to what happens when I shut down the machine.

    I don't think any of those is the right one - I have the same ones, but don't have the update.

    Possibly the CheckSUR tool is the way to go - I want to avoid you losing your Update History if I can...

    Please go to Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 and download the 64-bit version for Windows 7. Save it to your desktop, then doubleclick on the saved file.
    While that's running read about the tool on the site :)
    It can take a long time to 'install' - sometimes as long as an hour or more - so be patient. You'll get no 'results as such, and the results are buried a bit (read the page). Look for the log file (CheckSUR.log) and open it in notepad - if it's a reasonable size, post it in your reply (I'll have gone to bed by then) and I'll look at it in the morning if I can - Thirsdays are my busy day.

    Wow, you're a real expert! Thanks a lot.

    I downloaded the correct version of the System Update Readiness Tool (win 7 -x64) but the installation does not work:

    "The following updates were not installed: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)"
    (pops up 10 seconds after double clicking on it)

    Error codes

    How do I reset Windows Update components?

    run the hotfix from the first link, and reboot - try the CheckSUR tool again
    If it fails, try the HotFix from the second link, and see if that turns the trick and allows CheckSUR to run.

    This is bizarre:

    I was finally able to install the CheckSUR tool, but at the end it just says "the installation is complete".

    I looked for "CheckSUR" and "CheckSUR.log" in start-search, but nothing is found!

    Man I am starting to hate this damn POS software! Sorry for making you waste your time with this, it just isn't working.

    If you'd read the article I pointed you at, it tells you exactly where the log file is :)

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log and checksur.persist.log

    Please attach both file to your reply.

    Ach...I got carried away during installation, hmmpf. Thanks a lot for your help.

    Here's the log file for C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\checksur.log here below. There is no result for "checksur.persist.log"

    OK - the lack of the persist log is pretty much normal if there were no problems.

    How is Windows Update now?

    The issue has not re-appeared yet, but it may easily take 24h+ to determine if the issue is solved. Fingers crossed :)
